Alcohol Interlock Program: What is an interlock and who requires one?

The Alcohol Interlock Program is carried out by the Department of Transport for New South Wales to reduce the drink driving rate. Drivers can be ordered by the court to complete a minimum of 12 months in the program. The Interlock is an electronic device, fitted to the ignition system of a car motorcycle or heavy vehicle and functions as a breath tester. Drivers in the program must pass a breath test prior to commencing their journey. Legislative Requirements and the Alcohol Interlock Program Process:

Northern Rivers Auto Electrical are required to adhere to strict legislative requirements by Transport for New South Wales. Due to this, there are a few important things to know before contacting us to install and supply your interlock device. Firstly, you will require an official ‘Advice of Eligibility Letter’ from Roads and Maritime Services. We are legally unable to work on your vehicle without it. This should already have bene provided to you; due to privacy requirements, we are unable to contact the Roads and Maritime Services on your behalf.

After you have the paperwork, we book in your installation. Installation of an Alcohol Interlock Device takes approximately three hours in total. Following the installation, the device is required to be serviced everyone to two months. Installation prices vary from vehicle to vehicle, but services and device resets have fixed pricing. Servicing starts from $204. Transport for New South Wales estimates the total standard program costs to be approximately $2,200 per year.

Device Resets:

As a service provider, Northern Rivers Auto Electrical also offers device resets for participants in the Alcohol Interlock Program. If you perform a breath test with your fitted device and your blood alcohol content is over the limit, your car will lock and will not start until a reset is performed. Under the program guidelines, you have seven days to reset the device. Resets incur an additional cost and may influence the duration of your participation in the program.
